Getting Started

What is financial freedom all about?

There are many different reasons for why people want to pursue financial freedom. Some of the key drivers I hear from readers are the following:

  • I don’t like my job and want to do something I’m more passionate about.
  • I can’t stand working for someone else.
  • I want to spend more time with my kids and family.
  • I wish I could devote more time to my hobbies, travel, and personal interests.
  • I’d like to life a more peaceful lifestyle where I’m not constantly enduring financial stress.
  • I would prefer to help my parents and my kids by being more present with them.
  • I’d love to experience all that life has to offer.

The goal is to transition from a mindset of surviving to a mindset of thriving. Let’s compare the two.

Surviving

  • I make enough money to pay rent and utilities this month.
  • I can afford my new car payment.
  • I am able to get to and from my job each day while balancing family matters.
  • I work really hard this year and hopefully get a promotion and the year end bonus to afford a vacation.
  • I can treat myself to some self care every couple of months.
  • I’m allotted three weeks of paid vacation each year along with five paid sick days.

Thriving

  • I drop what I’m doing on a Tuesday morning and head to the beach for some quiet time in the sun.
  • I don’t miss any of my kids sports events.
  • I can invest into my hobbies not only on the weekend, but during the week as well.
  • I have the resources to help others, give back to the community, and work on projects that keep me motivated and engaged.
  • I have time to take a step back and analyze key milestones and adjust the trajectory of my life.
  • I am able to denote enough time each day to my health so that I can eat, exercise, sleep, laugh, and spend time outside.
  • I can learn any new skills that I want by having the time and money to invest in my learning.

In order to thrive, we need to dial in on our financial situation and establish control. We cannot let money constrain us but rather, have it work for us.
